Australian developers unlock new use cases for programmable networks at Nokia–Telstra hackathon

Australian developers took on new challenges in network programmability at the Connected Future Hackathon 2025, jointly organised by Nokia and Telstra through Telstra’s muru-D innovation hub. The event brought together more than 200 participants across 60 teams from Australia and India.

Using Nokia’s Network as Code platform and Telstra’s network APIs, teams built over 30 prototypes in a secure sandbox environment. These applications tapped into capabilities such as connectivity, identity and number verification, and location insights, with use cases spanning sectors including banking, healthcare, automotive and entertainment.

The winning team, Advanced Software Engineering COE, tackled phone number recycling by building an API-driven solution that helps businesses verify SIM ownership before sending SMS codes, reducing security risks and misdirected messages.

According to Nokia, the hackathon demonstrated how simple and secure access to advanced network capabilities can unlock practical innovation. Telstra added that the initiative reflects its shift towards treating the network as a programmable product that developers can build on.

The event also underscored the growing momentum behind Nokia’s Network as Code ecosystem, which now includes more than 65 partners across telecommunications, cloud, AI and software services.
